Baby Sling Newborn 3 Baby Sling Newborn
Which type/brand of baby sling is the best for a newborn?

I used the Baby Bjorn for my boys when they were a bit older, but will need to use a baby sling for my newborn when she arrives just to keep up with the boys. The slings kind of freak me out, but I know many people love them so I want to try it out. Which kind do you use and do you think it is safe, comfortable, etc? I'd love any advice!

The Moby style is best for newborns, IMO. It allows you to do all sorts of holds and works for older babies and toddlers too. Here's their website: http://www.mobywrap.com/

Baby Slings - 4 Pros To Baby Wearing

In this day and age, a baby sling has become a popular piece of equipment for a new baby.  Not only does it provide away to attend to your child's needs but be hands free it also has become fairly fashionable to wear your baby.  This article goes over some of the pros to baby wearing and why it is a good thing for your child.

1. You Can Get On With Your Life - A sling is a great way to multitask.  During the first 6 months of life, a baby needs the most attention as they become accustomed to the outside world.  Most babies want to be close to their mother at all times.  My son was always carried during the first few months and if he wasn't laying on me he would be on my Husband, father, sister, brother etc.  Someone always held him.  Using a sling allows you to attend to the needs of your child but at the same time get housework done or other work that needs to be done.  This means you do not have to wait until baby is sleep and also means that when your child does take a nap you can too because all the work will be done.

2. Less Distress For Your Baby - When a newborn is constantly close to their mother, there is no need to scream for attention.  Babies who are left in a cot will panic upon waking when they realize that their mother isn't with them.  This is because babies do not know they are safe.  They only know that they are safe by feeling their mother's touch.  If you are carrying your child in a sling and they wake, they will soothed by their mother's touch.  This means they will have less distress in their lives and feel safer.

3. Less Hassle Than A Pushchair - Although a pushchair can be handy when you need to go grocery shopping, generally a sling is a much better investment.  You can easily get on a bus with a sling, go through crowded shops and get around more easily.  There is no need to try and manoeuvre a pushchair around several thousand people or squeeze through isles.

4. Promotes Physical Development - When a baby is in a sling, he is very close to his mother and thus in tune with her breathing, heartbeat and movements.  This helps your child to regulate their own movements, breathing and heartbeat.  The sling is a great transitional tool to help your child cope with being outside of the womb.  Similar equipment such as mechanical swings do not work in the same way because it does not give babies the closeness they need with their mother.  Also research has shown that premature babies thrive and gain weight best when they are held continuously.  A sling is a great way to make this happen.
